Building in public. Sixteen weeks in. Today it’s built.

Three months ago I decided to build Socialheads in public.

I have come further in that time than I could have imagined. And I love it.

Socialheads is a messaging app for young people and those who support them.

I’m bootstrapping Socialheads. For it to exist I had to develop it myself. I applied all my tech expertise and research to build what people were asking for.

It is here, on my phone, working. I keep glancing at the app icon and it brings up so many emotions. Seeing your work distilled into an icon on your phone is quite powerful. To me it symbolises the past, present and a better future for the many people I’m doing this for.

The foundations are in place. I’m in talks with a local authority about a pilot. Another organisation is also interested in adopting it. These conversations now feel very different as I have something tangible to show.

The app is for organisations such as supported accommodation, children’s care homes, local authorities, mental health services, advocacy services, education, youth services and many others. It gives these organisations a safe communication channel so their staff can digitally support young people.
